Celebrating the fine art of the Silver Gelatin and Platinum Print.

"Nothing compares to the beauty and craftsmanship of the platinum and silver gelatin printing processes. Practitioners of the art of the platinum/palladium process do so for their love of the incredible tonal range and amazing archival stability. Those who print in the silver gelatin darkroom do so for the love of and the respect for the medium with it’s substance and archival quality. We wish to honor the photographers that perfect the art of these photographic printing methods that are over 100 years old. Thank you to all photographers who submitted images for this show, everyone of which we truely appreciate. This is a beautiful show, 56 images have been chosen for display on the walls, Congrats to the photographers who were selected!"

She is on Her way to Astoria

a thousand thoughts unsaid

The exhibit "Heavy Metal" opens at the Lightbox Gallery in Astoria Washington on September 8th. The above image will be included in this exhibit. The call for work was unique in that all of the photographs had to be produced in either the Silver Gelatin or Platinum process. The request was also made that the work be printed by the photographer. It is extremely gratifying to me that there are still a number of photographers that remain dedicated to film and traditional darkroom practices. I am certain that this will be a beautiful show.

The exhibit "Among Trees" opens at the Darkroom Gallery in Essex Junction, Vermont on August 2nd. I was highly motivated to participate in this exhibit because Beth Moon was the juror. I Love her work so very much...

Stop The Car

If you are traveling the roads of Northwestern Minnesota and Northeastern North Dakota inlate Autumn, you are likely to encounter a number of these. Each fall they are harvested from the fields and loaded onto trucks bound for Crystal Sugar. Every now and again a Sugar Beet with a taste for freedom will jump ship and land unceremoniously by the side of the road. For most, this is the end of the journey unless a kindhearted photographer of vegetables happens to spy you on the side of the road and stops to pick you up and tuck you carefully into the back seat of her car. That is what happened to this lucky Sugar Beet, or at least I would like to think she felt lucky. I saw her cold and alone lying on the shoulder of the road. "Kirby, stop the car and turn around, I just saw the perfect Sugar Beet." He did without question. He understands about such things. He understands about a broken row of poplar trees, a sliver of light on a milkweed pod and the charm of a renegade Sugar Beet.

Domestic Agreements

My dear and talented friend Ann has been kind enough to model and inspire me for a new project about domestic agreements.

Scott Seekins

Scott Seekins

I have been remiss in passing this information along. Scott Seekins is exhibiting his work at Gallery 13 in downtown Minneapolis. This exhibition is made more interesting by the fact that along with Scott's work several other notable artists are showing work that is "Scott inspired". I attended the opening last Friday and it is not to be missed. The closing party is Saturday the 25th.

Garden Bliss

Happily my garden is in full swing. I have been busy dividing perennials, trimming shrubs, removing and replacing rabbit damaged lilacs and mulching like a mad woman. We had an unseasonably cool and wet spring which makes my garden tasks that much more challenging. Today the temps are in the 90's with dew points in the 70's. My recently planted gems are in a state of shock. I speak gently to them as I do my best to quench their thirst. The Peonies are blooming in all their splendor - I really need to clip a few and try to make a pleasing portrait of them. I have some interesting vegetables that are also begging for some camera time. Oh, I also need to do laundry and buy groceries, but for the moment, I would rather spend my time quietly watching that momma sparrow feed her babies.
Until next time ~
